Birds of Wonder: First Friday with Katherine Weber

Join us as we host Katherine Weber and her amazing "Birds of Wonder" series for our first First Friday at our new Midtown location. Portion of sales will benefit Santa Cruz's Native Animal Rescue

Katherine Weber works on natural wood, clay board, and paper with acrylics, spray paint, paint pens, and occasionally iridescent and gold mediums. Nature, with its simple and complex organisms, plants and creatures, is a profound inspiration for her. Katherine's current works focus on the exquisite qualities and energy of the biological world. "I am mesmerized by light and sparkle, and each piece emphasizes this luminosity. I definitely enjoy the fine details, but don't obsess over perfection. I allow the story of each painting to unfold as I work." Original works, as well as prints, will be available.

    Garden-to-Glass Cocktails

Join Emily Han, author of Wild Drinks & Cocktails: Handcrafted Squashes, Shrubs, Switchels, Tonics, and Infusions to Mix at Home, as you discover how to make garden-fresh cocktails (or mocktails) using fruits and herbs from your backyard, farmers' market, or CSA box.

Through hands-on activities, demonstrations, and tastings, you’ll learn:

    • How to make syrups, shrubs, and infusions

    • How to infuse your drinks with fresh fruits and herbs

    • The essential cocktail formula every home mixologist needs to know

You'll have your pick of ingredients as we roll up our sleeves, muddle, shake, and taste. By the end of class, you'll have the inspiration and confidence to make your own creative, delicious, and healthful cocktails all year round. You will be the star of every gathering from now on!

The workshop will be followed by a book signing. Books will be available for sale, or you're welcome to bring any copies you already own.

Animal Instincts: A First Friday Benefit for the Santa Cruz SPCA

Pets – as much as furniture, art, and décor – make a space feel like home. To celebrate the various furry, feathered, and scaled animals that make up a family, Home/Work will host a critter filled First Friday on August 7th to benefit the Santa Cruz SPCA. Various artworks will be on display by local photographers, illustrators and painters, including Portia Shao, Janice Serilla, Constance Chandlee, Mike Bencze, and Alyssa Gintert, along with San Francisco-based illustrator Jeremy Fish and Philadelphia-based illustrator Michael Kappeler. Prints from the artists will be available, with a percentage of sales going to the Santa Cruz SPCA.

The Santa Cruz SPCA will bring two adoptable dogs, while Alyssa Gintert, founder of Seven Directions Institute of Art and Science, will bring her muse, Jessica the Frog to meet event goers. Come join us for unabashed squeals, plenty of pet talk, and a beer from Discretion Brewing.
